I have disabled my firewall to test ports in Live Messenger 8. When I tried to re-enable it, even running as admin, I got this messege: "windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." Where could be the problem and how to fix this issue?
Thanks -- Merzhin Brittany - France

Lost my firewall
OK, Start > Run > services.msc > Double click on the "Windows Firewall" service and select the Startup type to Automatic and click on Start to start the service. Have a nother try :o)

Is this Windows XP or Windows Vista? Have you tried using System restore to see if it will fix this issue? -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Are you using Norton Systemworks out of interest? I know someone who lost the firewall functionality after installing that on XP, maybe it could the same issue...?

Hi Andre,
I am running Vista Feb CTP B5308. Seeing this problem with firewall, I immediately tried to restore. But, after restart, SR told me it was not able to restore. I guess the problem is deeper.

Maybe you could just do a reinstall over 5308, not necessarily reinstalling, but upgrade the existing installation with the 5308 DVD. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Hi Scøtt, No I have only NOD32 installed as antivirus software. I do test Vista with its own security features. Thanks for your suggestion. -- Merzhin Brittany - France ""Scøtt Lovegrove [ScottIsAFool]"" a écrit dans le message de news: uoMmA$0TGHA.5908@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl...

Yes, I've just run (as admin) sfc /scannow command without success. Your suggestion seems to be the best way to repair Vista. I will save my files and settings before and try an upgrade with DVD. If not possible, I will have to reinstall Vista completely... -- Merzhin Brittany - France

Before you try to change anything, I'd check out the Event Log to see if there are any error messages which correspond to the firewall problem. In particular, look for EventID 7042...

Andre, I have tried to upgrade 5308/5308 and, about 2 hours later, I got this message: "The upgrade was not successful. Your original desktop is being restored. Do not restart your computer during this time." Then, after reboot : Windows setup rollback "Your Windows Vista installation has failed. Your previous version of Windows has been restored. To try installing Windows Vista, back up your files, and then perform a clean installation." I'll do it tomorrow... unless finding another solution.

Yah, I'm afraid that's the same error msg I got. The only way I could get the firewall back was to upgrade using the install disk. That's unfortunate cauz I wasn't able to determine the source of the issue :(
